Viviane Rombaldi Seppey

Viviane Rombaldi Seppey has been living in different countries and experiencing various cultures throughout her life. This immersion in contrasting places has nourished her creative process. With her art, she questions her place in the world, what defines it, how to belong and communicate.

Her work is inspired and created with objects that physically and culturally reflect her migrating life. Maps, phonebooks, books, photographs, collected objects are source materials used to describe the elusive meanings of places. They take the form of installations, collages, sculptures, drawings and artist’s books. These traces of public and personal sources become the fragments of her journey.

A chosen concept within a series determines the material and the form of the work. Although each project appears dissimilar, they are linked in the final form by recurring formal concerns, themes and meanings. The work is often characterized by a labour-intensive process; the material is hand cut, glued, woven, assembled and worked with precision and intense detail.

Rombaldi Seppey is constantly referring to her psychological and physical environment and aims to question typical ways of representing and perceiving the surroundings. She explores personal displacements in a transient world while trying to find her place in it.
